Globe valves are a fundamental component in fluid control systems, renowned for their throttling capabilities and reliability. Unlike many other valve types designed primarily for on/off operation, globe valves are engineered for precise flow regulation. Their name comes from the typically spherical shape of their body, though modern designs may deviate in form while retaining the same internal mechanics. These valves are characterized by a linear motion disk that moves perpendicular to the flow path, offering fine control over fluid velocity and pressure.

Classification by Body Design
Globe valves are categorized into different body configurations, each affecting flow characteristics, pressure drop, and installation suitability.

1. T-Pattern Globe Valve (Standard Pattern)
This is the common design. The flow path changes direction twice, resulting in a significant pressure drop. It provides the throttling capability among globe valves and is ideal for systems where flow control is more critical than pressure loss.

2. Y-Pattern Globe Valve
The stem and seat are angled at approximately 45 degrees, reducing flow resistance and pressure drop compared to the T-pattern. This design is suitable for applications requiring frequent operation and moderate throttling without compromising too much efficiency.

3. Angle Pattern Globe Valve
In this design, the inlet and outlet ports are positioned at a 90-degree angle. This eliminates one directional change in the flow path, reducing resistance and pressure loss. Angle pattern valves are often used in systems where space constraints exist or where piping layout benefits from a right-angle connection.

Classification by Disk Type
The performance of a globe valve in throttling or shutoff applications largely depends on the disk design.

1. Plug-Type Disk
This disk has a tapered shape and fits snugly into the seat, providing throttling performance. It's ideal for applications requiring fine flow adjustment and is commonly used in high-pressure systems.

2. Ball-Type Disk
The spherical shape offers reliable shutoff capability. Though not as precise in throttling as the plug type, it is well-suited for general-purpose on/off service.

3. Composition Disk
This disk features a replaceable non-metallic insert, making it effective in sealing against metal seats. It’s widely used in water systems and other applications where soft sealing is for leak prevention and noise reduction.

Classification by Stem Orientation
1. Rising Stem Globe Valve
The stem moves up visibly when the valve is opened. This design provides a clear visual indication of the valve’s position, making it suitable for manual operation in systems where frequent adjustment is required.

2. Non-Rising Stem Globe Valve
Here, the stem does not move externally; instead, the disc moves along a fixed stem. This design is ideal for tight spaces where vertical clearance is limited, though it offers less visibility into valve status.

Classification by Actuation Method
1. Manual Globe Valves
Operated by handwheels, manual globe valves are for systems where valve adjustments are infrequent or require manual oversight, such as residential water systems or small industrial applications.

2. Pneumatic Actuated Globe Valves
These use air pressure to move the valve disc, providing rapid and remote control. They are common in automated industrial processes, especially where speed and responsiveness are required.

3. Electric Globe Valves
Fitted with electric actuators, these valves can be integrated into control systems for precision regulation. They are ideal for HVAC systems, process industries, and any environment requiring electronic feedback or automation.

Classification by Connection Type
1. Flanged Globe Valves
These are used in high-pressure applications or where easy maintenance and disassembly are needed. The flanged ends make them ideal for industrial pipelines.

2. Threaded Globe Valves
Common in small-diameter plumbing applications, threaded globe valves are easy to install and replace. They are typically used in residential water lines and low-pressure systems.

3. Welded Globe Valves
Designed for permanent installation, welded globe valves are used where leak-proof operation is critical and disassembly is rare, such as in chemical or high-temperature pipelines.
